The Arts Business Institute is coming to the Big Island of Hawaii!
A third workshop on ABI’s upcoming 2013 Hawaii tour has been added on September 5-6, at the Volcano Art Center, where “People, Art and Nature Thrive.” Located in a rainforest setting in Volcano Village, Hawaii, the Art Center is close to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Active volcanic action can be witnessed in the park, where molten rock is being churned beneath the crater floor. Spectacular views and tours are available there.
On this island paradise, artists of all types will gather for a two-day intensive workshop. The focus of ABI workshop events is on building a sustainable creative business, and taking it to the national marketplace. Artists will learn new ways of thinking about marketing, selling and presenting their work to gallery owners and buyers throughout the US and Canada.
Strategies for a New Marketplace – An overview of changes in the art and crafts industries, and new opportunities for artists.
Wholesale 101 – Elements of wholesaling; how to structure your business for production; the wholesale selling process; terms and standard practices; how retailers think; presentation of your work, and more.
The E’s of Selling – Learn how to take control of the selling experience, building customer trust and using proven techniques that result in increased sales.
Creative Marketing – Identify your target market, craft your marketing message, and communicate effectively with buyers to drive interest in your work and gain market share.
Product Development – How to design your line for the marketplace and build value into it; pricing for profit, starting a production studio; trends and how they influence buying.
Selling Strategies – Selling concepts, networking, prospecting; working with reps, selling to major retailers, selling one-of-a-king at wholesale, and more.
Panel Discussion – Successful artists and production studio owners share their experience and insights on owning and running a studio business.
Special Session for Fine Artists – Lunch-hour discussion on marketing fine art, selling reproductions, options for artists, and how to get found.

The Volcano Art Center itself offers many classes for artists, and sells art and craft work in two galleries on their property. They also provide opportunities “for artists of all mediums to teach, perform, demonstrate, and share themselves and their creative souls with others.”
The workshop takes place at the Niaulani Campus of the VAC, which will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2014.
